VP & Senior Counsel – EMEA Data Protection, American Express, London, United Kingdom – International Association of Privacy Professionals

We have an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer within the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express. The lawyer will report to the global Chief Privacy Counsel, based in the US. This position will be responsible for leading a team of experienced lawyers to provide best-in-class legal advice on applicable EMEA data protection laws, rules and regulations. In addition, this role will provide strategic advice on global data-related laws as we build enterprise products and platforms, develop public policy positions, and create a flexible data protection program of the future.

This position will be responsible for leading a team of experienced lawyers to provide best-in-class legal advice on applicable EMEA data protection laws, rules and regulations. In addition, this role will provide strategic advice on global data-related laws as we build enterprise products and platforms, develop public policy positions, and create a flexible data protection program of the future.

Examples Of What You Will Do In This Role:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the EMEA data protection team;
  • Provide pragmatic advice to senior executives at AXP on the wide range data protection issues, including the EU GDPR, UK GDPR, marketing/advertising requirements, and international data transfer;
  • Review, negotiate and draft data protection terms in vendor agreements, confidentiality agreements, privacy policies/customer disclosures, etc.;
  • Proactively monitoring and providing advice on data related legislative and regulatory developments in EMEA;
  • Proactively engage and coordinate with regional lawyers in the US, Latin America and APAC to monitor regulatory trends and provide advice from a central team standpoint;
  • Support the design and delivery of continuing legal education programs on privacy-related issues;
  • Participate in and advise on various strategic initiatives related to cutting-edge privacy and data use issues.

Required Skills:

  • Law degree (UK or EU) and bar admission;
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant data protection experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment (in-house experience strongly preferred);
  • Corporate transactional experience with negotiating and drafting data provisions for a variety of complex commercial agreements and customer facing disclosures;
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory postures across multiple data protection authorities in the EU and UK;
  • Proven track record of leading cohesive, high-performing legal teams;
  • Effective communication and influencing skills, with the ability to drive projects forward in a large, matrixed organisation;
  • Strong interpersonal and client management skills, with an innovative and pragmatic attitude to help resolve novel, complex issues;
  • Intellectually curious about leadership, emerging technology, and other relevant topics;
  • Willingness and flexibility to take on new responsibilities and challenges as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve;
  • Willingness to accommodate global calls and travel (~10%).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior tech, fin tech and/or financial services experience;
  • CIPP/EU certification;
  • Experience with handling data protection issues for multi-national companies; and
  • Externally oriented, with a strong privacy network in the EMEA region.
